FEANI

The Fédération Européene d'Associations Nationales d'Ingénieurs (FEANI) was formed in 1951 to:

  • Secure the recognition of European engineering titles and to protect those titles in order to facilitate the freedom of engineers to move and practice within and outside Europe.
  • Safeguard and promote the professional interests of engineers.
  • Foster high standards of education and professional practice and regularly review them.
  • Promote cultural and professional links within the engineering profession, especially in Europe.

FEANI has at present National Member organisations from most countries in Europe, including all 15 European Union Member States. The British National Member body is the ECUK's International Committee, composed of experts on international engineering affairs drawn from the Board and the UK engineering institutions.

FEANI maintains an Index of courses at higher education institutions in its 25 member countries as well as those in France and Norway. These courses are recognised by FEANI as fulfilling the education requirements for the EUR ING title. The Index also contains brief descriptions of the education systems of these countries.

The Index contains approximately 14,000 engineering courses, each of which details its title, award and duration. The Index can be purchased on CD-ROM from FEANI for €100, with 5 updates available at the reduced price of €35. More information including how to purchase the Index CD-ROM can be found at www.feani.org/euring.html#Purchase

The FEANI headquarters consist of a small secretariat located in Brussels at:

Avenue Roger Vandendriessche 18
1150 Bruxelles
Belgium
Tel: +32 2 639 03 90
Fax: +32 2 639 03 99
E-mail: Rita Heissner

The official languages of FEANI are English, French and German.

FEANI Registration and the European Engineer Title (EUR ING)

Registration is open to engineers who are registered with the National Member organisations. (For example, in the UK, this means that applicants must already be registered with the ECUK.) Applicants should have minimum qualifications exemplified by a secondary education validated by certificates awarded at about the age of 18 and a minimum of an approved three-year degree. All the university courses accepted by FEANI as qualifying for registration are listed in the FEANI Index, an extensive reference document which also includes descriptions of the education systems in each FEANI country. A certificate of registration is issued to registrants, who may use it to prove their European credentials when necessary.

Engineers having educational qualifications and a further period of professional experience making a total of seven years from the beginning of their higher education may apply for the title European Engineer, abbreviated as EUR ING, and be entered on the FEANI Register. The award of EurIng is recognised by a parchment suitable for framing and a certificate of registration.

The UK Privy Council has approved the use of the title EUR ING as a prenominal, in front of the name and before all other ranks and titles. It does not replace the title Chartered Engineer (CEng), which should still be used as a post-nominal. Chartered Engineers are generally eligible for the EUR ING title, and over 12,000 British Chartered Engineers have already achieved the qualification.

Administration

The Register is administered by the National Committee in each of the member countries of FEANI, and by the Brussels secretariat. Following recommendation by a National Member, admissions to the EUR ING title are examined by a European Monitoring Committee formed of experts in the engineering education systems of Europe. Applications may take several months to go through all these stages and for the diploma to be prepared.

Application and Fees

Engineers (who must be CEng), wishing to register with FEANI can download guidelines and application forms from the FEANI website or contact the membership department of their UK Chartered Engineering Institution for guidance and application forms. All applications should be made through the applicant’s member Institution. Registration fees are at present £35 - €59.80, renewable every five years, plus a one-off payment of £100 - €170.86 for the EUR ING title, with cheques made payable to your Institution.

Income tax allowance is claimable against the £35 - €59.80 subscriptions to FEANI, which is on the list of bodies approved for such purposes by the Inland Revenue. No allowance is claimable for the EUR ING title fee of £100 - €170.86.
